Libya has a 9-3 formal education structure. Libya does not distinguish between primary and lower secondary, but rather treats the first nine grades of school as basic (fundamental) school. Basic school has official entry age of six and is divided into three cycles consisting of grades 1-4, 5-6, and 7-9. Secondary school consists of grades 10 12 and is known as intermediate education. In principle, basic school is free and compulsory. The academic year lasts 31 weeks at the primary level and 33 weeks at the secondary level. (UNESCO IBE, World Data on Education. 6th Edition, 2006-07. Revised 4/2007).
As of 2010, UIS classifies the school structure in Libya as having a 6-3-3 structure
