Prior to 2002, the structure of education system had been 6-3-3 and the first two stages had been called primary and lower secondary. In principle, public school is free and basic education is compulsory. The academic year is 32 weeks in length and is broken down into semesters. Among other data sources, unique EPDC data collections for Syria include administrative data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (2006 - 2010), household survey data from MICS (2006), indicators derived from UIS data, and learning outcomes data including TIMSS (2007, 2011).
